Meet the Full Time Staff!

Simon Helyer - Golden State YMCA CEO

Simon was born and raised in England! Since graduating from the University of Manchester, with a Bachelor's of Science in Outdoor Recreation and Finance, he has been involved with YMCA Camping. Simon and his family joined the YMCA Camp Sequoia Lake family in January 2016, following a 14-year stint for the State YMCA of Michigan. While camp is closed Simon lives in Visalia with his wife Erica and two boys Lewis and Owen. During the year he enjoys talking all things camp with prospective campers and alumni. Please feel free to contact Simon with any questions. Email or call the office at 559-624-1110.
Taylor Douglas - Family Camp, Retreats & Rentals Program Director

Taylor was born and raised in Appleton, Wisconsin. She is a graduate from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, where she studied Youth Programming and Camp Management. Taylor brings a lot of passion, new ideas and diverse experience from working at various camps throughout the Midwest. She first experienced the magic of camp when she was 12 years old and hasn't missed a summer since. Most recently, Taylor worked as the Group Camping Program Director for the Greater Des Moines YMCA Camp.
Taylor and her two dogs, Boomer and Buddy, moved to Visalia in January 2019 to join the YMCA Camp Sequoia Lake family. In her free time she enjoys traveling, fishing, gardening, and kayaking. If you’d like to send a welcome, discuss family camp or share your favorite camp traditions, Taylor can be reached at (559) 624-1110 and
Gus Lopez-Noriega - Youth Program Director

Gus is originally from Boston, MA. He began working as a counselor at an overnight camp in Utah, YMCA Camp Roger, in 2011. He quickly realized he had a passion for youth development. After his second summer at Camp Roger, he was able to take on the duties of a seasonal Program Director.  By working under three directors at Camp Roger, Gus had the opportunity to learn and develop his own unique style that helped him become a successful camp leader. In 2015, he took on the role as Camp Director of YMCA Camp Roger. He believes that camp gives campers the perfect environment away from screens and social media to find themselves around amazing remodels.
Gus and his fiancée Cristyna moved to California in August 2018 at the end of their Utah camp season. Gus and Cristyna are expecting their first child very soon. He is very excited for his family to spend time up at YMCA Camp Sequoia Lake this upcoming summer! If you have any questions or would like to chat about camp, please don't hesitate to reach out to him at (559) 624-1110 and

Julie started working at the Golden State YMCA in May of 2017, as their bookkeeper.  "I thoroughly enjoy my job here, from the duties I perform, to the people I work with. I am the mother of three young men in their early twenties, and one sassy fifteen year old daughter.  I have twin grand babies, one boy, one girl, who will hopefully grow up to be campers!"
